Are You Proud To Be An American?

There is an ever increasing anti-American sentiment among young-people, especially among college students. The reality is they are being taught to hate this country and everything that’s made it great. I don’t know about you, but I am proud to be an American. I am not ashamed of that and neither should you. By proud, I do not mean that I possess an arrogant attitude toward other countries or look down upon others who are not. I am thankful to have the opportunity to live in the greatest country the world has ever known. Compared to all others, we are exceedingly blessed and privileged. People across the world are passionate about where they come from, it is apart of life. Love for country is love for self. It is odd and atypical to find a person who hates, despises, or refuses to love their country. Only a twisted, unhealthy kind of cynicism results in despising one’s own country. I am not proud of everything my country has done in the past and do not accept a lot of ideas my country puts forth in the present. However, at the root of it, her core values are what make her who she is. It is these core principles that have led to the ending of chattel slavery, a blight on this nation’s history. It is her core principles that contributed to women’s suffrage and many other groundbreaking human rights achievements. Individual freedom that is free to exist with limited government interference is a priceless commodity and it should not be taken for granted. I know a few people who cannot acknowledge the fact that they live in a great country. They are ashamed of America, not realizing the world is better off for her. Why? I do not know. Perhaps it is an exercise is self-righteousness. It would appear to be the result of arrogant virtue signaling that keeps a person in denial of this country’s greatness. One thing is for sure, America is more than a just place, she is an idea. I truly believe it is possible to be American by birth, yet anti-American at heart. But that is actually a testament to her greatness and goodness. She affords freedom and guarantees protection for the citizens that hate her. Do not be discouraged by those who hold cynical attitudes towards your country neither should you allow them to stymie your joy in the fact that you’re an American. Celebrate this day because it truly is great to be an American!

Below is an excerpt from the Declaration of Independence. The United States has been faithful to this charge since her birth:

“We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness. — That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed, — That whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new Government, laying its foundation on such principles and organizing its powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their Safety and Happiness.”
